Triathlon Checklist

TriathlonRaceDayChecklistThis Sunday my wife and I will be competing in our town’s centennial mini sprint triathlon (.3 swim, 9 mile bike and hilly 5k run).  This will be my 5th triathlon and the 1st for my wife, with that I promised her that we will do this together and I plan on being by her side for every stroke, pedal and step.  In today’s post I’m going to list the things you need on race day, start planning now and not the night before or morning of, way too stressful.  Could you imagine leaving without the most obvious things like your bike, helmet or running shoes?  Luckily my house is only 5 minutes from the event and if I happen to forget something I can swing back home and pick it up.  The weather looks perfect, in fact it may be a bit chilly in the AM, can’t believe I’m saying that for a August triathlon.

Swim:

  • Tri Shorts
  • Goggles
  • Wetsuit (only for those cold water tri’s, will not need one Sunday, water is warm enough)
  • Towel
  • Lubricant
  • Swim Cap (provided by Triathlon)

Bike:

  • Bike
  • Helmet
  • Bike Shoes
  • Socks
  • Light Windbreaker (only for colder tri’s)
  • Shirt (same shirt I’ll be wearing during run)
  • Water Bottle
  • Energy Gu Espresso Love, Power Gel, Hammer gel etc.
  • Bike Gloves (not necessary)
  • Spare tubes
  • CO2
  • floor air pump
  • Tire levers

Run:

  • Running shoes
  • Energy Gu Espresso Love, Power Gel, Hammer gel etc.
  • Race Belt

Additional Items:

  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Change of clothes for post race
  • Thirst for post race, beer anyone?

I think that pretty much sums it up.  Actually one last thing, do not kill yourself training the week of your triathlon/event.  At this point you really can’t increase your fitness level and you want to enter your triathlon/event with fresh legs and energy.  Less is more the week of your event.
